1st Cavalry Division
The 1st Cavalry Division was unofficially active and known as the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, later named the 5th Cavalry in 1861, from 1855, on 13 September 1921 they were officially activated and they have been active and ready to battle ever since.
The 5th Cavalry fought in many Civil War engagements, and is famous for playing the Bugle and shouting “Charge!”
They have participated in the Indian Wars, Civil War, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Shield and Storm, Bosnia, and are currently fighting in the Global War on Terrorism.
They were baptized by fire and blood on western plains in the era of horse mounted cavalry. Named the “First Team” by General William C. Chase.
The 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Cavalry Regiment were led by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and other decorated characters. The 7th and 8th were assigned on 13 September 1921, and the 5th on 18 December 1922.
Other platoons in the organization: 82nd Field Artillery Battalion(horse), the 13th Signal Troops, 27th Ordinance Company, Division Headquarters, and the 1st Cavalry Division Quarter Master Train, later becoming the 15th Replacement Company.
Major General Robert L. Howze was the 1st Division Commander.
In early Division history, they usually traveled by horseback and endured harsh weather and terrain. They patrolled the Mexican border, stopping smugglers, and enforcing the law whenever and wherever.
In the 1930’s the Great Depression forced thousands into the streets. The Civilian Conservation Youth Corps, trained by the 1st Division, constructed barracks for 20,000 Anti Aircraft soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas in preparation for the air age.
The era of the tank, automobile, aircraft, and parachute forced the 1st Division to be dismounted and transported overseas to be deployed as foot soldiers.
